According to a newly-released ACLU poll, 65% of Californians support the legalization of marijuana. 32% were against legalization, and 3% were undecided on the matter.

The staggering support of Californians for regulatory marijuana laws are a good indication that California could follow in Colorado and Washington’s footsteps towards legalization in 2016. What does this mean for medical marijuana in the state? No one is sure, but many assume it will remain in limbo until 2016.

Gavin Newsom, the Lieutenant Governor of California, will be chairing a blue ribbon committee that will focus on marijuana legalization within the state. He will be joined by “leading legal, academic and policy experts from across the state and nation.”

Newsom will head a “multi-year research effort” that will explore proposals on taxation requirements, potential revenue growth, economic stimulus and regulatory commitments needed if marijuana is legalized in California.
