Ferndale, Jackson and Lansing, Michigan, all voted to support the legalization of marijuana today. The three areas all proposed similar legislation that would remove both criminal and civil penalties for personal possession as long as it was below one ounce.

The ordinances received overwhelming support from voters. Ferndale had the highest percentage of approval, with 72% of the vote. Lansing’s bill achieved 63% approval. Jackson had the least support of the three, but still reached 61% approval.

“Politicians must open their eyes to the political reality that marijuana legalization has arrived and is supported by a massive majority of voters. If they continue to drag their feet on the issue, we will take it to the people wherever possible, and we will win.”

“These votes in Michigan, along with the resounding vote in Portland, Maine illustrate that not only are the American people considering moving towards legalization of marijuana, they overwhelmingly are demanding it,”  stated norml Communications Director Erik Altieri.
