2013 was a landmark year for cannabis, which saw legalization efforts succeeding both at home and around the globe. In addition, newer, stronger strains were unveiled and new medical research showcased how much cannabis can help patients in need. It was tough to cut down this list to only five entries, but we now present our favorite marijuana memories of 2013.

5. Majority of Americans Support Legalization for Adults

According to a Gallop poll released in October, 58% of Americans believe marijuana should be “made legal” for adults. Pollsters believe this influx comes from self-identified Independent voters, who 50% of endorsed marijuana use in 2012 and 62% in 2013. Only 39% of those polled stated that they opposed legalizing pot, which is another sign of the times: marijuana legalization is taken hold in the minds of the American people.

4. Marijuana Cures Little Girl’s Seizures

Charlotte Figi suffers from Dravet Syndrome, a rare form of epilepsy known for violent seizures. Charlotte was having 300 seizures a week. As a last resort, her mom gave her cannabis oil, and the results were immediately positive. She now has just two or three seizures a week, and she’s begun to dance and play. Before the medical marijuana, she couldn’t walk, talk or eat. And she even has a bud named after her: Charlotte’s Web, a cannabis-sativa strain known for its high levels of cbd. 3. Sebastopol’s New Mayor Owns a Dispensary

Mayor robert-jacob, a 36 year old entrepreneur and politician, was just recently elected as mayor of Sebastopol, California. And he is also the owner of Peace in Medicine, the only medical marijuana dispensary in Sebastopol. The city of over 7,000 in Sonoma County leans towards the left, but this was still game-changing. Although he claims to be more than just the “marijuana mayor,” Jacob’s election showcases the changing cultural view of marijuana in the United States.

2. Uruguay Legalizes and Regulates Marijuana Marketplace

In December, Uruguay will have the world’s first marijuana marketplace. Those who purchase or sell marijuana will need to be over 18-years-old and will need a license, which will be strictly enforced and regulated. There is also a 40-gram limit on purchase. But the nation’s drug czar maintains the price of a gram will fall to $1 by late 2014, and the fact that an entire nation could work to legalize marijuana acts as a catalyst for other counties to follow suit.

Both Washington and Colorado trail-blazed the way for individual states to legalize recreational marijuana in 2013 as they get ready for 2014.
