Although cannabis is consumed by many as a nightly ritual to treat insomnia and improve sleep quality, it may be far less effective as a sleep aid for older adults who have chronic pain. The study is one of the first to examine the correlation between quality of sleep and whole plant medical cannabis use. “In the final analyses with the sub-sample of MC [medical cannabis] patients only, Pearson correlations showed that only frequency of MC use was associated with sleep problems,” wrote lead author Dr. Regular cannabis consumers also had more difficulty falling asleep than non-consumers, per the results, indicating the beneficial effects of cannabis may decrease with consistent use. But after a more prolonged period of regular use, regular cannabis consumers reported waking up more frequently in the night than those who did not use.
