The New York Times reports that growing, possessing, transporting or consuming cannabis is punishable by as long as five years in prison. The Korean Times reports the Coast Guard was tipped off this past January and later secured enough evidence to detain the five, confiscating about 260 grams of cannabis during the roundup.

According to the Korean Times, the 13 plants were found in the centre’s hallway, backyard and rooftop. It is alleged the mother of one of the five accused runs the daycare and the weed was grown from March to July 2020.

The Coast Guard reports they believe the individuals have violated narcotics laws by both growing weed at the unidentified daycare centre and then transplanting some to several wetland sites along the country’s west coast.
