420 (sometimes stylized as 4:20, Four-Twenty, etc.) is a code-term used primarily in North America that refers to the consumption of cannabis and is popular in cannabis subculture. Although many origin stories exist, the most widely discussed concerns the “4:20 Louis” group that searched for abandoned cannabis crop near San Rafael High School. April 20th has become a counterculture holiday in North America where people gather to celebrate and consume cannabis with each other.

AbbVie is New York-based pharmaceutical company that manufactures and markets marinol (dronabinol). Currently, they are the only American company distributing any synthetic-cannabinoids.

Afghan Kush is a cannabis-indica strain of marijuana that is part of the kush family. It originated from the hindu-kush mountain range. Afghan Kush is known for its orange/brown tint. It has a high THC content and makes for an effective pain reliever.

Arrests of the Rich and Famous is a norml report that lists high-profile marijuana arrests in the United States. The report chronicles arrests of movie and TV stars, musicians, athletes, singers, performers and other cultural icons. The report argues that “The US government, primarily law enforcement agencies such as the Drug Enforcement Administration (and its predecessor, the Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs) since the 1930s have championed the arrests of famous citizens as a show of force, resolve, and, as a supposed deterrent to marijuana use.”

William “Bill” Maher, Jr. (born January 20, 1956) is an American stand-up comedian, television host, political commentator, satirist, author, and actor. Before his current role as the host of HBO’s Real Time with Bill Maher, Maher hosted a similar late-night talk show called Politically Incorrect, originally on Comedy Central and later on ABC.

A Blunt is a slang term for cannabis rolled with the tobacco-leaf “wrapper” from an inexpensive cigar or wrap called a blunt. Blunts take their name from Phillies Blunt brand cigars, but often refer to any commonly-available and iinexpensive cigar or cigarillo. Another common term for a blunt is an “El-P” or “L”, a reference to the El Producto brand. Due to the tobacco content in the wrapper leaf, blunts carry with them the risks of tobacco use, including addiction and cancer.

A Bluntwrap is a tobacco wrap made specifically for rolling a blunt. Sold in packs, these eliminate the need to gut a cigar by providing the necessary components. Like all blunts, these carry the risk of normal carcinogens added to tobacco wraps.

A Bong is a glass water pipe used for the consumption of cannabis, tobacco, or other herbals. Suction is created when a carb is closed by a slide which is removed when the user is ready to inhale the smoke. The word is derived from the Thai word baung (บ้อง), which refers to a bamboo pipe used for smoking marijuana. The use of bongs date all the way back to the 16th century. It was introduced to China through the silk road and remains a culturally significant pipe for those who smoke weed.

Bong Water is water that is used in a bong. It is used to filter impurities from the smoke. Some people believe that by drinking the bong water one gets more high. However, thc has very low solubility in water, proving to be an inefficient method.

A Bowl is a pipe used for consuming marijuana through combustion, most often made of hand blown glass. Bowls can also be created from ceramic, metallic, and wood. A bowl can include a carburator, but this is not a necessary component of a bowl.

British Columbia is the westernmost province of Canada. The province is known for one of the highest concentrations of marijuana home-grows on the North American continent. The potency and black market trade has established bc-bud as an internationally known strain of marijuana.

Bubba Kush is a cannabis-indica hybrid strain of marijuana that generally produces an intense head high.

A Bubbler is a pipe intended for smoking cannabis. The piece is designed so that smoke burned from the bowl must travel through an apparatus containing a pool of water before it can be inhaled by the user. Although the terms bubbler and bong are sometimes used interchangeably, a bubbler can be used without a slide whereas a bong needs one.

Butane Hash Oil is a resinous matrix of cannabinoids obtained from the cannabis plant. It is obtained by passing liquid butane through the cannabis plant. This cold temperature isolates and crystalizes the THC. Butane hash oil il is the most common type of hash-oil currently available.

Cached is a term for when all of the marijuana in a bowl has been smoked and all that is left is ash.

California Proposition 19 was a defeated statewide initiative on the November 2, 2010 ballot that would have legalized marijuana in the state of California. It would have also permitted local governments to regulate and tax the commercial production, distribution and sale of marijuana.

A Calyx is the sepal of the cannabis plant. They form a whorl around the around the petals to protect the flower of the bud. Calyxes form after the vegetative state of the plant begins to transform into the flowering stage. Seeds are also stored within calyxes.

Cannabinoids are a group of chemical compounds that can stimulate cannabinoid receptors on cells that repress neurotransmitter releases in the human brain. Receptor proteins include the endocannabinoids which are naturally produced within humans and animals), the phytocannabinoids (often found in cannabis but also in other plants) and synthetic-cannabinoids (which are produced artificially by humans). thc is the most prominent cannabinoid, which is the primary psychoactive compound within marijuana. There are at least 85 isolated cannabinoids isolated that can be harvested from cannabis.

A Clone is a marijuana plant that was grown asexually from rooted cuttings. These plants are normally considered female. Clones retain the exact same DNA of their parent plants, which allows a grower to establish a reliable plant for desired potency.

A Cola (also known as a “bud site”) is the area of a female cannabis plant where the flowers and buds grow together. Healthy plants typically have one large cola at the center with smaller ones protruding from the plant.

The Colorado Marijuana Legalization Initiative (Amendment 64) was a proposed amendment in the state of Colorado that was passed on November 6, 2012. The amendment legalized personal use of marijuana for adults over the age of 21. It also allowed citizens to commercially cultivate, manufacture and sell marijuana products.

Adults 21 and older are permitted to grow up to three immature cannabis plants and three mature cannabis plants within the state. All of the cannabis that is produced by the plants may remain in the place in which they were grown. Legal adults are also allowed to travel within state with up to one ounce of marijuana.

Cotton Mouth is the feeling in one’s mouth as it dries up as a result of smoking marijuana and getting high.

Crimes of Indiscretion: Marijuana Arrest in America is a statistical report published by norml-foundation in 2005 with comprehensive analysis of marijuana-related arrests in the United States between 1995 and 2002. A Gravity Bong (also known as a waterfall bong or bucket bong) is an apparatus constructed for consuming cannabis. The gravity bong is made of two containers. Traditionally, these containers are glass, but plastic products can be subsitituted, as well. The large container has an open top and is filled with water. The smaller container has an attached bowl and an open bottom. The user lights the bowl and lifts the container upwards, creating a pressure difference. Due to this pressure difference, smoke slowly fills the smaller container until the bowl is removed and the user inhales the captured smoke.

A Grinder  (also called an “herb grinder” or “tobacco grinder”) is a cylindrical device designed to shred herbs, including cannabis. Devices are divided into chambers and layers that use metal or plastic teeth to shred through herbs. The shredded herbs are then collected in the next chamber. Although grinders have varying numbers of chambers, each grinder must have at least two chambers. Many grinders come with screens that serve to catch kief after it has been separated from the marijuana plant.

Guts refers to the tobacco content of a blunt cigar before it is emptied. This material is often removed and discarded before being smoked. Because it is made of tobacco, it contains the same carcinogenic risks as other tobacco products.

Hash Oil (also known as dabs, shatter, or earwax) is a resinous matrix of cannabinoids obtained from the cannabis plant by solvent extraction. Hash oil is the most potent of the three main cannabis products, which are herb (marijuana), resin (hashish), and oil (hash oil). Hash oil can be consumed in various ways, including smoking, vaporization, orally or topically.

Hashish, also commonly known as “hash“, is composed of compressed or purified preparations of stalked resin glands, called trichomes, collected from the buds of the female cannabis plant. It contains the same active ingredients—such as thc and other cannabinoids (cbd)—but in higher concentrations than unsifted buds or leaves. The name hashish comes from the Arabic word ( حشيش ) which means grass. The tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) content of hashish comes in wide ranges from almost none to 70%, and that of hash oil from 30–90%.

Heady refers to the effects of cannabis-sativa. A “heady” high generally is more conducive to cognitive function than the body high that cannabis-indica produces.

Founded in 1925, the inaugural Board of Governors included preeminent scientists and scholars including Albert Einstein, Sigmund Freud, Martin Buber and Chaim Weizmann. thc was first discovered at the University in 1964 by a team of scientists lead by Raphael Mechoulam and Yechiel Gaoni.

High is a term used to describe being under the influence of marijuana. Symptoms vary, but can include: increased heart rate, dry mouth, low attention span, sensation of deep relaxation, heightened sense of enjoyment and increased appetite.

This “high” is produced by the chemical thc, which enters the brain within seconds of consumption, causing feelings of euphoria, relaxed inhibitions, fragmentary thoughts, lack of concentration, impaired memory, drowsiness, and even sudden panic or paranoia.

The Hindu Kush mountain range spans 500 miles between central Afghanistan and northern Pakistan. It is famous for the cannabis-indica subtype, kush. The highest point of the range is Tirich Mir (which goes up to 25,289 feet) and be found in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan.

The Marijuana Policy Project is an activist group that supports the legalization of cannabis. Formed in 1995, they primarily argue that marijuana prohibition has failed. They lobby to change marijuana legislation and policies. They also garner media attention for their cause and often support smaller groups in their activism.

Marinol (dronabinol) is the only US FDA-approved synthetic cannabinoid. Developed by ABBVIE and intended to stimulate appetite for AIDS patients, there is debate whether or not the drug is as effective as natural marijuana.
