The Newport Economic Development Commission (NEDC) was awarded $2.518 million in mediation for two separate lawsuits filed following the relocation of a medical marijuana cultivator that was previously located in Newport. A formal request was made to the Arkansas Medical Marijuana Commission several months later to reverse the decision to relocate the facility, but it was denied. Once the property and building deeds have been transferred, the building must be assessed for repairs and updates. Couch filed another lawsuit in October 2021 for the Newport-Jackson County Industrial Development Bond Board to reclaim possession of the property sold to Natural State Wellness, including the building built on the property by Natural State Wellness. According to Chadwell, NEDC will receive the land it sold to Natural State for less than market value, as well as the building at the site.
