In 2016, Australia legalized medical cannabis and the Department of Health’s Office of Drug Control oversees the national medical marijuana program. With about 60 per cent of the country under lockdown, one 28-year-old driver decided it was an opportune time to attempt to transport cannabis about 900 kilometres across the country in his Mitsubishi. The Australia Capital Territory (ACT), allows for the possession and growth of small amounts of cannabis but federal law still prohibits recreational cannabis, according to Weedmaps.
With parts of Australia under strict lockdown as the country grapples with a resurgence in COVID-19 cases, police are cracking down on those who defy travel restrictions.
